Otti vs Headspace: which one do you need?

Headspace and Otti both want to help you feel a bit better each day, but they’re very different apps. Headspace is a large library of meditations and sleep content, with an AI companion, coaching and therapy. Otti is a self-care pet: an otter you look after while you take tiny steps for yourself. Some people use both.

Choose Headspace if…

  • You want to learn to meditate, with 500+ guided sessions to choose from.
  • You want sleepcasts, focus music or guided movement.
  • You’d like an AI companion to talk to, or access to therapy or coaching (sometimes through your employer).
  • You want it on your Apple Watch, Mac or the web too.

Choose Otti if…

  • Meditation feels like a lot right now, and tiny steps like drinking water or getting out of bed feel more doable.
  • You want a pet to look after, tamagotchi-style, that never gets sick or dies.
  • A 1, 3 or 5-minute breathing float is all the guided calm you need.
  • You’d like something playful and private: a river story, friends’ otters holding paws, and a journal that stays on your phone.

What Headspace does well

Headspace, made by Headspace Inc., calls itself an “everyday mental health” app. At its heart are 500+ guided meditations, sleepcasts, breathing exercises, focus music and movement. Paying members aged 18+ in the US, UK, Canada and Australia can also talk to Ebb, an AI companion, and Headspace offers therapy and coaching, partly through employers. It’s known for its illustrated style, and reviewers call it approachable for beginners.

  • A deep library: 500+ meditations, sleepcasts, breathing exercises, focus music and movement. Otti has none of this.
  • More support when you need it: Ebb, an AI companion for paying members, plus therapy and coaching, partly through employers.
  • A clean design that reviewers call approachable for beginners, and say helps with stress and sleep.
  • A run streak you can hide if you’d rather not see it, and support can restore one that reset by mistake.
  • A student plan at $9.99 a year in the US.
  • Widely used: 4.8 stars from about 974,000 ratings on the US App Store, where it’s an Editors’ Choice, and 4.3 stars with 10M+ downloads on Google Play.

How Otti is different

  • A pet instead of a library. You hatch one of six 3D otters and care for it tamagotchi-style: feeding, naps, bubble baths and play. You can tap its head, rub its belly or squish its cheeks. It never gets sick and never dies.
  • Tiny steps instead of sessions. You choose a small daily plan from 16 gentle steps, like brushing your teeth, stretching or tidying one small thing. After three steps in a day, a clam present opens with a little treasure.
  • One simple calm exercise. In the River, you float with your otter doing calm 4-6 breathing for 1, 3 or 5 minutes. No meditation library, no audio, no sleep sounds and no courses.
  • No AI and no therapy or coaching. Otti is a gentle daily companion, not a medical service. If you want an AI companion or a therapist, Headspace offers those and Otti doesn’t.
  • A story and a small circle of friends. Your otter grows from pup to grown-up on a journey down the river in six chapters, and in the optional Raft, friends’ otters hold paws. No chat, no public profiles.
  • Your journal and mood check-ins stay on your phone, and there are no ads.
  • Otti is new and in beta, on iPhone and Android only.

Pricing

Headspace is mainly a paid app. In the US it costs $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year, according to its store descriptions, with a 7-day free trial on the monthly plan or 14 days on the yearly plan. Students can get it for $9.99 a year. A help article last edited in 2023 lists a family plan at $99.99 a year for six people, so that price may have changed. We found no lifetime option. There isn’t much of a free tier in the app; Headspace’s help centre points to free content on YouTube and similar places. Members can also share a Guest Pass, a 30-day trial for new users.

Otti is in beta and free to try. Pebbles, the currency for outfits and treats, are only earned through self-care and can’t be bought. We’ll share full pricing before launch.

Missing a day

Headspace has a “run streak” that counts consecutive days you meditate. If you’d rather not see it, you can hide it, and if it resets by mistake, Headspace support can restore it. There’s no pet or character in Headspace.

In Otti, your otter can get hungry, sleepy or a bit messy if you’ve been away, but it never gets sick, never dies and is always happy to see you. Its growth and story progress never reset. There is a simple day count, but nothing is taken away when it restarts.

Questions people ask

Is Otti a Headspace alternative?

Only partly. Headspace has far more guided content (500+ meditations, sleepcasts and focus music), plus an AI companion, coaching and therapy. Otti is a self-care pet for tiny daily steps, and its only guided exercise is a simple breathing float. If you want to meditate, Headspace is the better fit.

Is Headspace free?

Not really. Headspace costs $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US (checked October 2026), with a 7-day or 14-day free trial, and $9.99 a year for students. Its help centre points to free content on YouTube and similar places.

Is there a free Headspace alternative?

Otti is free during its beta, and pricing will be announced before launch. But it isn’t a meditation app: it’s a self-care pet with tiny daily steps and a short breathing float. If you mainly want guided meditation, a meditation app will suit you better.

Does Otti have an AI companion or therapy?

No. Otti has no AI and no therapy or coaching, and it isn’t a medical service. If you’re struggling, please reach out to a doctor or a mental health professional.

Can I use Otti and Headspace together?

Yes. They do different jobs, and some people use both: Headspace for meditation or sleep, and Otti for small steps and a pet to come back to. If two apps feels like pressure, pick the one you look forward to opening.
