Otti vs Habitica: a habit RPG and a self-care pet, compared

Habitica turns your to-do list into a role-playing game. Otti turns tiny self-care steps into a cozy life with an otter. Both make real-life effort feel a bit like play, but they work very differently when life gets busy. Here’s how they compare.

What Habitica does well

Habitica, made by HabitRPG, Inc., is a long-running, open-source habit tracker built like a role-playing game. You add Habits, Dailies and To Do’s, and completing them earns experience, gold and items for your pixel avatar. Around that sit levels and classes, gear, pets hatched from eggs and potions that grow into mounts, quests with a party, challenges, reminders, widgets and seasonal events. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision, Android, Wear OS and the web.

  • A full task manager, not just self-care: positive and negative Habits, Dailies and To Do’s for anything you want to keep on top of.
  • Real game depth: levels, classes, gear, quests and a big collection of pets and mounts to hatch and raise.
  • Party play. You can team up for quests and keep each other accountable, join challenges, send private messages and gift gems or subscriptions.
  • A generous free tier: the whole app is usable without paying.
  • It’s everywhere, from iPhone and Android to Wear OS and the web, and it’s open source.
  • Lots of long-term users, and reviewers often recommend it for ADHD and chronic-illness routines. Google Play gives it 4.6 stars from 75.9K reviews and an Editors’ Choice badge.

How Otti is different

  • A cozy self-care pet instead of an RPG. You hatch one of six 3D otters (curious, silly, brave, gentle, cozy or dreamy), each with its own look and personality, and you can tap its head, rub its belly or squish its cheeks.
  • Tamagotchi-style care. Your otter gets hungry, sleepy, messy or wants to play, and you feed it, tuck it in for naps, give it bubble baths and play together. Its face shows how it feels. It never gets sick and never dies.
  • No health points to lose. A day count restarts after a missed day, but your otter’s growth and story progress never reset.
  • Tiny steps instead of a task list. You pick a small daily plan from 16 gentle steps, like drinking water or stepping outside, and after three steps in a day a clam present opens with a little treasure.
  • A story it grows up in: from pup to grown-up and down the river through six chapters, with an evening story to unlock on days you take care of yourself.
  • A daily mood check-in with a note and a week view, and calm breathing with your otter. Your journal stays on your phone.
  • Pebbles, Otti’s currency, can only be earned through self-care. Habitica sells gems.
  • Otti does much less than Habitica: no custom habits or to-dos, no levels, classes or quests, and no web, iPad or smartwatch app. It’s also new and in beta.

Pricing

Habitica is free to use, and the whole app works without paying. An optional subscription costs $4.99 a month, $14.99 for three months, $29.99 for six months or $47.99 a year on the US App Store ($5, $15, $30 and $48 on the web). Gems, Habitica’s paid currency, cost $0.99 for 4, $4.99 for 21, $9.99 for 42 and $19.99 for 84, and subscribers can also buy gems with gold. A Group Plan costs $9 a month plus $3 for each extra member. The Google Play listing says the app contains ads; the iPhone listing doesn’t list advertising.

Otti is in beta and free to try. Pebbles, the currency for outfits and treats, are only earned through self-care and can’t be bought. We’ll share full pricing before launch.

Missing a day

In Habitica, missing things has a cost, by design. Missed Dailies and negative Habits take away health points (HP); missed To Do’s don’t. If your HP reaches zero, you lose one level and that level’s stat point, all your gold and one piece of equipment, which you can buy back. Your pets aren’t harmed. During a boss quest, your party members’ missed Dailies damage everyone, even if your own damage is paused. If you need a break, Pause Damage in Settings stops HP loss from missed Dailies. If you like a bit of game pressure, this can be motivating; in reviews, some people say HP loss and the death penalty feel harsh after a hard stretch.

In Otti, your otter can get hungry, sleepy or a bit messy if you’ve been away, but it never gets sick, never dies and is always happy to see you. Its growth and story progress never reset. There is a simple day count, but nothing is taken away when it restarts.

Questions people ask

Is Otti a good Habitica alternative?

It depends on what you use Habitica for. If you want a full task manager with RPG stakes, Otti isn’t that: it has no custom habits, to-dos or levels. If you want something softer for self-care, Otti gives you tiny daily steps, a 3D otter you care for tamagotchi-style and a story it grows up in, with nothing to lose when you miss a day.

Is Habitica free?

Yes. The whole app can be used for free. An optional subscription costs $4.99 a month or $47.99 a year on the US App Store (checked October 2026), and gems, its paid currency, start at $0.99 for 4.

What happens when you die in Habitica?

If your health reaches zero, you lose one level and that level’s stat point, all your gold and one piece of equipment, which you can buy back. Your pets aren’t harmed. You can turn on Pause Damage in Settings to stop missed Dailies from costing HP while you take a break.

Should I pick Habitica, Finch or Otti?

Habitica is a game-like task manager with real stakes for missed Dailies. Finch and Otti are both gentle self-care pet apps: Finch has a bird and a big feature set, and Otti has a 3D otter you feed, bathe and play with, which grows up on a river journey. If you want to organise your whole to-do list, pick Habitica; if you want a softer daily companion, try Finch or Otti.

Does Otti have levels or a health bar?

No. There are no levels, classes or health points. Your otter grows from pup to grown-up over your care days, and those never go down. It can get hungry or sleepy if you’ve been away, but it never gets sick and never dies.

Is Habitica good for ADHD?

Many reviewers say Habitica helps with ADHD and chronic-illness routines, because it makes chores feel like a game. Some reviewers also find the HP loss harsh after a hard stretch. If that sounds like you, Pause Damage can help, or a gentler app may suit you better. Otti isn’t a medical service.
