Otti vs Stoic: a guided journal and a cozy self-care pet, compared
Stoic and Otti both help you check in with yourself each day, in very different ways. Stoic is a deep, private journal with guided prompts, a morning plan and an evening reflection. Otti is a cozy self-care pet with a simple mood journal on the side. Here’s how they compare.

What Stoic does well
Stoic, made by Stoic app inc., is a journaling and mental-health companion built around a morning plan and an evening reflection. It offers guided journals and prompts; voice, photo and video entries; CBT thought templates; mood check-ins; a habit tracker; meditation and breathing; app blocking; therapist export; a passcode lock; and AI mentors and reflections. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision, Android and the web. It suits people who want to journal properly and make it a daily habit.
- Real depth for journaling: guided journals, varied prompts, CBT thought templates, mood check-ins, a habit tracker, and voice, photo and video entries.
- A clear daily rhythm, with a morning plan and an evening reflection. Reviewers say this structure helps them build the journaling habit, and that the app is very customisable.
- Strong privacy. Stoic says your journal stays on your devices (or your own iCloud, if you choose) and that it has no servers for entries. Its App Store label shows no tracking and no data linked to you.
- Tools for harder days and for working with a therapist: meditation and breathing, app blocking, therapist export and a passcode lock.
- It’s on nearly every device, including Mac, Apple Watch and a web app.
- Well rated: 4.8 stars from about 36,000 ratings on the US App Store, and 4.6 stars with 100K+ downloads on Google Play. It’s also an App Store Editors’ Choice.
How Otti is different
- A pet at the heart of it. You hatch one of six 3D otters, from a curious river otter to a dreamy star otter, and care for it tamagotchi-style: feeding, naps, bubble baths and play. Stoic has no pet or character.
- Tiny steps instead of journaling sessions. You choose a small daily plan from 16 tiny steps, like drinking a glass of water, stepping outside or taking 3 slow breaths. After 3 steps in a day, a clam present opens with a little treasure.
- A story it grows up in. Care days move your otter from pup to grown-up and down the river through six chapters, with an evening story to unlock on days you take care of yourself.
- A much lighter journal: a daily mood check-in (five moods) with a note, and a week view. Like Stoic’s journal, it stays on your phone.
- Optional friends. In the Raft, friends’ otters hold paws and you can send cheers and small gifts. There’s no chat and no public profiles.
- Otti does far less as a journal. It has no guided journals or prompts, no AI, no CBT templates, no charts beyond the week view, no export and no lock. It isn’t a medical service, and it’s only on iPhone and Android for now. If journaling is your main goal, Stoic is the stronger tool.
Pricing
Stoic has a free tier with daily prompts, quotes and basic guided journals. Two subscriptions unlock more: Premium and Premium + AI. Stoic’s website doesn’t list prices, and Apple doesn’t label billing periods. On the US App Store, Premium shows $39.99 and $6.99, and Premium + AI shows $99.99 and $12.99; reviews suggest the higher price in each pair is yearly and the lower one monthly. There’s also Stoic Lifetime Premium for $299, added in July 2026. Free trials last 7 days for Premium and 3 days for Premium + AI, on annual plans only, and reviewers note that a trial turns into an annual charge unless you cancel.
Otti is in beta and free to try. Pebbles, the currency for outfits and treats, are only earned through self-care and can’t be bought. We’ll share full pricing before launch.
Missing a day
Streaks and badges are a central part of Stoic: its FAQ says you need to journal daily to keep a streak going. It isn’t strict about it, though. A missed day can be restored by completing it afterwards, and you can switch streaks and badges off entirely if they don’t help you. A June 2025 update also loosened the rules. There’s no pet or character to be affected by a missed day.
In Otti, your otter can get hungry, sleepy or a bit messy if you’ve been away, but it never gets sick, never dies and is always happy to see you. Its growth and story progress never reset. There is a simple day count, but nothing is taken away when it restarts.

Is Otti a Stoic app alternative?
It can be, if what you want is a gentle daily check-in rather than a full journal. Otti has a daily mood check-in with a note and a week view, built around a 3D otter you care for. It doesn’t have Stoic’s guided journals, prompts, templates or AI, so if deep journaling is your goal, Stoic is the better fit.
Stoic vs Otti: what’s the main difference?
Stoic is a journal first: guided prompts, a morning plan and an evening reflection, with lots of tools around them. Otti is a self-care pet first: you take tiny daily steps, look after your otter and watch it grow up on a river journey, with a simple mood journal on the side.
What happens in Stoic if you miss a day?
Your journaling streak can break, but Stoic’s FAQ says you can restore a missed day by completing it afterwards. You can also switch streaks and badges off.
What happens in Otti if you miss a day?
Your otter may get hungry or sleepy, but it never gets sick and never dies. Otti’s day count restarts, but your otter’s growth and story progress never reset. It’s always happy to see you come back.
Is my journal private in Stoic and Otti?
Stoic says entries stay on your devices or your own iCloud and that it has no servers for them; if you use its AI features, the current entry is sent to OpenAI. In Otti, your journal and mood check-ins stay on your phone, and there are no ads.
